Upon the signing into law of Wisconsin Act 60 in December 2023, Wisconsin took a major step forward in preparing students for lifelong financial success. Beginning with the class of 2028, every public high school student will be required to complete a one-semester personal finance course to graduate. This is a huge win for students and the future of our communities.

But turning policy into meaningful learning requires more than just a graduation requirement. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, this new mandate will affect an estimated 65,657 students each year. That means Wisconsin will need more than 650 highly qualified personal finance educators, assuming each one teaches about 100 students annually.

That level of implementation will take time, training, and tools. And that’s exactly where Money Path can help. If you are one of the educators tasked with this important mission, Money Path and the SecureFutures team are here to support you.

Money Path is a web-based planning resource that equips students with the knowledge and decision-making power to explore real-life scenarios, from post-high school pathways to long-term financial goals. Students identify a path—college, an apprenticeship, military service, or direct entry into the workforce. Then, using Money Path’s up-to-date data on career starting salaries and post-secondary education costs, they develop a real-life budget, set savings goals, and compare different options side by side to envision the long-term impact of their decisions.

“Money Path does a fantastic job of showing students different career paths that are available to them. Not only how much they pay, but also their return on investment for choosing that path. Financial education is vital. Everyone makes financial decisions, and the earlier that we can help students become financially literate, the more confident they’ll be in making smarter decisions with their money and ultimately become financially independent.”

– Brian Zimdars, Business Marketing & Info Tech Teacher – Middleton High School
